Slough made it three league wins in the space of eight days with victory at Histon.

The home side were also looking for their third successive win, but the Rebels got the result they wanted thanks to goals from Lewis Putman and Charlie Mpi. After having by far the better of the first half, Slough had to work hard in the second to make sure of all three points.

Looking to continue where they left off on Tuesday evening, Slough went on the attack from the off with Mpi having a shot blocked behind for a corner in the opening minute. The striker then got up to head at goal from the resulting kick, but Denzel Gerrar claimed the ball.

Mpi was in the thick of the action, clipping an inviting ball through to Charlie Strutton which the latter was just unable to seize upon, before an attempted lob cleared the crossbar.

Histon had a penalty claim turned down with Dan Hicks appeared to handle Luke Trotman’s cross, but it was the Rebels who continued to have most of the pressure, with Adrian Sear working well with Declan Benjamin in midfield and Paul Stonehouse and Lewis Putman combining well down the left.

Benjamin was next to test Gerrar with a long-range shot, and the keeper parried it away but only to Putman, who was denied by a headed clearance as he went to attack the ball.

Putman fired wide from a deep Warren Harris cross, but was not to be denied a goal, which came from a 42nd-minute free kick 30 yards from goal. Just as he had done against Dorchester on Tuesday evening, Putman stepped up and struck the free kick home, the ball nestling in the bottom corner to give Slough a lead they richly deserved.

There was still time in the first half for both sides to go close. Jordan Nicholson almost delivered it for Histon when Mark Scott failed to claim a high cross, but Nicholson’s curling effort was cleared off the line by Sear.

Warren Harris’ cross found Strutton in space, and he volleyed a looping effort over Gerrar, only to see the ball rebound back off the crossbar before being cleared.

Slough again started the second half brightly and Putman threatened with a low ball across the face of goal, before Benjamin hit a long-range effort which crashed off the corner of the woodwork and wide.

The away side kept the pressure up in search of a second goal, and Gerrar needed to make a fingertip save from Mpi’s flicked header.

Histon went on the attack with Jordan Nicholson trying to chip the ball over Mark Scott, but the Slough keeper stood firm and caught the ball at the second attempt.

Minutes later, Nicholson again caused Slough problems as he looked to burst clear of the last defender, but Sean Fraser’s superb tackle ensured he was thwarted.

And on 65 minutes, Fraser had a big hand in Slough’s second goal, which was to prove decisive. The full-back swung in a free kick from out wide, which Mpi headed back across the goal and past the despairing dive of Gerrar. The Slough striker is in a rich vein of form, having now scored four goals in his last three games.

Three minutes later though, the lead was halved when Scott parried a shot straight into the path of Tom McGowan, who scored easily.

Histon then had their best spell of the game, and the game became a little feisty as the home side went in search of a leveller.

Josh Oyinsan spurned a glorious chance in the 78th minute. He somehow missed from two yards out, shooting wide whilst unmarked after Ryan Auger’s free kick was flicked on by Evan Key.

In response, Slough tightened up and withdrew the attacking threat of Putman in favour of Ryan Hope.

Late on, a dangerous ball across the face of goal was cleared after Auger failed to control it, but the hosts were unable to seriously test Scott again and the Rebels stood firm to claim the points.
