Slough suffered a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Isthmian League, Premier Division Wingate & Finchley in their latest pre-season friendly.

The home side took just three minutes to break the deadlock, Rob Laney pulling the ball across for Ola Sogbanmu to score into an empty net.

Wingate & Finchley doubled their lead 11 minutes later, when Karl Oliyide received the ball 25 yards out, turned and powered a fierce shot into the top corner, giving Mark Scott no chance.

The hosts kept the pressure up on Slough, who found it difficult to keep possession at times, and nearly went 3-0 up but Powell drilled his shot just wide after excellent build up play.

Oliyide saw a shot superbly turned away by Scott as half time neared, and the same player ran down the Slough left side and chipped the ball over the onrushing Scott, only to see his effort fall wide of the far post.

Slough were very much fortunate to still be within touching distance at the interval, with the Rebels not having tested Bobby Smith in the Wingate goal.

A series of half time changes freshened things up for the Rebels, and at last Slough had a sight of goal, but Scott Harris fired one effort over and Jamie McClurg shot wide.

Oliyide forced another save from Scott, however Slough showed significant improvement from the first half and managed to impose themselves on the hosts a bit more, holding onto the ball much better and putting some dangerous balls into the box.

Slough pulled one back when half-time substitute Lewis Putman was presented with the chance to score from the penalty spot after Kieron Street tripped him in the box. Putman coolly dispatched the penalty, sending Smith the wrong way.

Mechak Williams nearly extended Wingate & Finchley’s lead but shot wide – however the hosts did find a third goal on 84 minutes as Williams teed up Rob Laney to score at the second attempt after Scott had saved his initial shot.

Next up for the Rebels is a trip to Imber Court, home of Metropolitan Police, on Tuesday evening.
