Slough continued their pre-season preparations with a 1-1 draw at Imber Court, home of Ryman Premier League side Metropolitan Police.

Rebels included trialists Georges Ehuhi, George Frith and Alex Witham in the starting eleven, and all produced positive displays in a competitive match – a performance with joint-manager Jon Underwood described as a ‘big step forward against a very good and established Step 3 side’.

Jamie McClurg should have opened the scoring for Slough but failed to get a shot away, with Johnnie Dyer’s follow-up blocked.

The home side kept Jake Somerville on his toes with several good stops, the Slough keeper coming off his line to good effect to close down the danger. Somerville kept out a strike across goal after a fine run from the Met’s left winger, but was powerless to stop the home side’s number nine from finishing into an open goal after a cross-shot from the left-back was deflected into his path.

In the second half, Slough made numerous changes, giving George Short, Tom Moran and Sean Fraser match time, and had the better of the half. Short hit the post from a corner, and after the ball was cleared behind, Reece Yorke saw a header cleared off the line.

The home side almost doubled their lead in spectacular fashion, but an effort from the halfway line bounced off the bar and over, with Somerville scrambling to get back.

Forward Alex Witham hit a post late on, with Ryan Parsons firing straight at the Met goalkeeper after the ball was worked back out wide and into the middle.

But with five minutes to go, Witham scored a deserved equaliser, cutting inside from the left and firing into the bottom corner from the edge of the box.

Slough’s final pre-season match is at Leatherhead on Saturday, 3pm KO.
