A depleted Slough Town side suffered a disastrous collapse in the first round of the League Cup, going down 6-1 at AFC Hayes in front of just 82 spectators.

Both sides started fairly well, with the hosts looking more threatening. Slough’s first effort came in the 26th minute, Matt Miller turning and shooting well wide from 25 yards. Danny Jefferies had a low effort saved by Keiran Jimmy minutes later.

AFC Hayes broke the deadlock on 31 minutes. Danny Jordan was put through on goal, and was able to score after his initial effort had been saved by Barnard, with the striker having far too much time to do so.

Jordan forced Barnard into another good save soon after with a fierce drive. Blaise O’Brien also saw an effort saved. At the other end, Danny Jefferies tried an effort on goal from a free kick, but could not get enough bend or power on his effort.

AFC Hayes grabbed a second goal four minutes before the break. Following a quickly-taken free kick out on the left, the ball was played inside and John Swift hit a screamer from 30 yards, which moved in the air past the outstretched hand of Barnard in the Slough goal, who could only help it into the side of his net.

After the half-time break, Slough were unable to stamp any authority on the game, and conceded two quick-fire goals. Firstly Trevor Charlery fired in when put through on goal, before former Northwood and Hemel defender Fergus Moore headed in a cross at the far post to make it 4-0.

Danny Jefferies went as close as any Slough player up to that point with a dangerous whipped cross, which just evaded Matt Miller in the middle. However AFC Hayes made it 5-0 when a cross from the right was headed in by O’Brien. It was all too easy and was bringing back painful memories of last season for the Rebels faithful.

A terrible mistake from Richard Barnard almost made it six. A Hayes shot appeared to be heading wide, but Barnard somehow almost managed to push it in and spared his blushes by putting it behind for a corner kick.

With the game lost, manager Wilkinson decided to introduce youth players Mugisha and Gill into the game, for Metcalfe and Davies.

Things went from bad to worse for Slough with a lack of discipline which resulted in two red cards. Following a scuffle, the referee brandished red cards for Rebels assistant boss Nick Roddis and Mosiah Polidore for the home side.

The Rebels managed to net a consolation goal in the 77th minute. A left-wing cross from Raj Gill was met by fellow substitute John Ellis, making his debut, who nipped in before ‘keeper Jimmy and stroked the ball into an empty net following an initial block.

Slough’s Dean Harper then became the third man sent off after picking up a second yellow card, leaving an already depleted side looking even thinner.

AFC Hayes ended the scoring two minutes from time, when another cross from the right wing was headed in by Kevin Chakaodoza.
