A stunning individual strike from full back Micky Engwell took the Rebels clear of the relegation zone. His third minute goal against bottom side Bishop's Stortford gave Slough a slender but vital three points in a match that they desperately needed to win.

Fielding three new signings, Slough put in a blistering first half performance and were unlucky not to go into the break with the match won. Midfielder Mark Hall from Hayes and a new striking duo in Dean Samuels and Simon Quail gave Slough a sharper look.

Seven minutes after Engwell's effort Samuels should have put the Rebels two up when he beat the last man, only to blast his shot directly at Stortford keeper Gavin King. And on the half hour mark it was Samuels again who combined neatly with Quail but his shot was amazingly cleared off the line.

There were a few scary moments in the Slough goal for Paul Wilkerson but he and Slough survived and really there was only one team in the match by half-time.

However, Slough's second half performance was far less convincing with the `home' side — playing at St Albans' ground - pushing forward with good effect.

Central defender Stuart Snowden went close with a superb header that went just wide and the lively Tony Comerford had a great chance to equalise on 55 minutes. Finding himself with just Wilkerson to beat, Comerford failed to hold onto the ball and the chance was gone.

Nicky Winger was the next Stortford player to go close but he hit his shot straight into the grateful arms of Wilkerson. Dave Greene squandered the last chance for the home side to draw level leaving Slough with three very valuable points.
