Slough suffered a bad case of the championship jitters at Victoria Road on Wednesday. On a night they will quickly want to forget, the Rebels were comprehensively beaten by last season's Vauxhall League champions Redbridge Forest.

Two goals from Andy Weddell condemned Slough to only their fourth defeat of the season and leaves the championship race tantalisingly poised. Although the Rebels are still four points clear at the top, both their closest rivals, Wokingham and Kingstonian, have a match in hand. Kingstonians' visit to Wexham Park Stadiun on Tuesday is beginning to acquire an air of do-or-die about it.

Slough started the match against Redbridge brightly enough and might have been two up after just 20 'minutes if Neal Stanley and Barry Rake had been able to finish more accurately. The home side took the lead in the 27th minute when Rebels' keeper Trevor Bunting missed a corner and Weddell headed into an empty net.

Slough tried hard to get back into the match after half time — with Tony Dell, replacing the injured Gary Dodd, very much to the fore — and for a while it was all one way traffic. But, despite all the Rebels hustle and bustle, Redbridge always looked the more likely to score again.

And so it proved on the stroke of full time when Weddell capitalised on some sloppy defending by Slough to force in another corner off the post. It was the second time in four meetings this season that Redbridge had beaten Slough.
