STAINES scored both their goals in the first half against rivals Slough last night, and really have only themselves to blame for not getting at least four.

Slough opened confidently enough, and yet from the moment they conceded the first goal there was only one side in it.

Teale had kicked the ball out to Beyer on the edge of the box. Beyer's weak return pass was gratefully accepted by goal poacher Rossiter, and placed in the back of the net after only 10 minutes.

Slough literally went to pieces from then on. Powell nearly added another a minute later, and just after that Kemp scored, but was adjudged to have fouled the keeper.

Every corner Rossiter took caused problems. Teale was not handling well, nor did the defence protect him enough. An inswinging corner from Rossiter in the 20th minute beat all the Slough defence, and John Powell chested the ball in.

Then two further corners were dropped by the jittery Teale. At last Slough swung play to the other end, and Feely's shot beat the keeper, but McLean made a diving header to clear off the line.

Just on half-time Staines were awarded a penalty, and Rossiter blasted the ball against the crossbar and out of play.

So Staines went in 2-0 up, but really the margin should have been wide enough to have already settled the result. Slough brought Gane on early in the second half, and the side were at least testing the home defence, their finishing was poor. Rossiter and then Powell were given reasonable chances on the break, but did not succeed in adding to the scoreline.

Slough should start looking over their shoulder, because they are certainly not clear of relegation yet. As for Staines, they have to keep on winning, and Saturday's away match at bottom club Tilbury is the next hurdle. They have done remarkably well to reach the Middlesex Senior Cup Final yet again, and Easter Monday's encounter against Enfield should be well worth seeing.
