SLOUGH Town's latest win on Saturday took them to third place in the Isthmian League Premier Division table - their highest ever position - but if they are to retain such an exalted position they will have to improve on this uncertain performance.

For the second time in a few weeks they almost threw away a three goal lead in this comedy of errors in which referee Gordon played a leading part.

He penalised Slough centre-back Richard Strong repeatedly but Avenue's Webberley kicked Friend while lying on the ground without receiving so much as a warning. Then, in the final seconds, the referee surprisingly disallowed an own goal when Willson punched Reardon's corner into his own net. As the Avenue 'keeper did not appear to be hustled in any way the goal seemed perfectly alright.

Both defences will not look back with much satisfaction on this game. Walthamstow's defenders were caught napping when Strong headed home Reardon's corner after 45 seconds. Then 45 seconds later Slough's defence was completely flat-footed as Cotter shot against the bar with keeper Teale nowhere and Mackay had to clear off the line.

But in the 17th minute Slough scored again. Russell burst in from the right and although Willson saved at full stretch, the ball ran lose to Reardon whose low shot was fumbled by the recovering keeper before it crept into the net.

Another minute and it was 3-0 when a quick break down the left saw Kiely cross to Metcalfe and he had the simplest of chances to score.

Slough lost Turl on the half hour with a ricked back with Paul Lee substituting and Alan Gane moving to right back.

The second half saw Slough fade out of the picture so much that the East Londoners took complete control. The match fitness of the home players was clearly in question - an important factor that will have to be considered when they go to Maidstone's ‘renowned’ gluepot on February 3 in the F.A. Trophy.

Following yet another free kick given against Strong, Worrall hit the bar again. But Walthamstow eventually pulled one back in the 75th minute when Russell and Gane confused each other, the ball being played through to Mitchell who gave Teale no chance.

Three minutes later, it was 3-2. Strong mistimed a header that fell to the feet of Worrall whose mis-hit shot completely deceived Teale and crept under the keeper into the net.

Slough were looking ragged now but Metcalfe and Friend made low crosses into the Walthamstow defence that should have really been snapped up.

The disallowed own goal was quickly followed by the final whistle giving no allowance for various stoppages - no doubt to the relief of the Slough players and supporters.
