SLOUGH Town, who in the past have had to fight all the way to get anything from their matches with Staines, completely outplayed their neighbours on Tuesday as they marched into the fourth round of the Hitachi Cup.

But Slough's injury jinx struck again, with centre-half Richard Strong going off in the 30th minute to have eight stitches inserted to a three inch gash on his head.

By then Slough were already 2-0 in front and although the enforced reshuffle, with Tim Turl switching to centre-half and Alan Gane to right-back, caused them to lose their earlier sparkle they still remained on top.

If Slough can now add consistency to their individual ability they must stand a chance of repeating their feat of 1976 when they won a similar competition, then known as the Rothmans Isthmian League Subsidiary Cup.

Slough got off to a great start with a fourth minute goal from a corner given needlessly away by Jester Williams. From Cooke's flag kick on the left, Turl headed on and the alert Peter Feely nodded home from point blank range - a well rehearsed move.

The visitors did not learn from this and when Cooke took another corner in the 26th minute they again failed to mark tightly. A defender sent the ball straight to Turl who twice juggled with it as he turned to fire just inside the near upright.

Staines frustration showed in the 51st minute when Ennals, who was often bewildered by the ball trickery of Lee, was booked for fouling the Slough winger.

Apart from a lively run by Williams and a tame shot by substitute Hynes - who came on for Fidler - the visitors had nothing to offer. It came as no surprise when Slough got goal No. 3 in the 76th minute, good work by Friend paving the way for Metcalfe to beat keeper Yates.
