A brilliant last minute goal by Dave Russell gave Slough Town their third successive Isthmian League win on Tuesday at the expense of a desperately unlucky Wycombe.

The result delighted Slough general secretary Roger Lee, who was Wycombe's treasurer for 17 years before quitting the club because he didn't want to work under chairman Reg Williams.

Mr. Lee said: "The circumstances of my departure have not been forgotten and I was told by a Wycombe official that I would not be welcome in the boardroom. But Dave Russell's goal made it a great night for me."

Slough showed skill and determination in defending stubbornly against a menacing Wycombe attack in the first half, with goalkeeper Richard Teale and ex-Wycombe centre back Richard Strong outstanding. This pair gave fine cover to Tim Turl who returned to the side after injury and a summer spent in Canada.

Manager Joe Arpino said: "I took a gamble with Turl who played with his ankle strapped up. I brought him in because John Beyer was ruled out with a bruised toe."

Turl, booked in the 70th minute for bringing down Birdseye, had Teale to thank for getting him out of one or two awkward situations. Teale, whose mistakes in the first match of the season had led to Slough losing to Barking, has not conceded a goal in the last three games.

His only moment of luck came when Scott hit the near post in the third minute. Kennedy was then put clean through by Birdseye but Teale came out like an express train to save at his feet. After Teale had again foiled Kennedy, Wycombe lost some of their momentum and Slough made a few good breakaways.

Substitute Mark Foster replaced the injured Terry Reardon for the second half and received a lecture from the referee 10 minutes later for not advising him that he had come on.

But Foster and Slough gradually grew in confidence and Russell side-stepped Mead to fire inches over in the 80th minute before grabbing a sensational winner one minute from the end.

Turl and Lee worked the ball to Russell on the edge of the penalty area and the little striker turned sharply past two defenders to slam an unstoppable shot into the top left hand corner of the net.

He said afterwards: "That was my best goal so far - but you haven't seen anything yet."
