Penalty miss sums it all up

SLOUGH'S season - so often highly exciting - came to a depressing end at Wexham Park last night.

The defeat left Slough in eighth place in the Isthmian League Division 1 - instead of the fifth spot they were aiming for last night.

They even missed a second half penalty which could have given them at least a point to lift them a couple more places.

As it is Tilbury lifted themselves to fifth place with a goal from Johnny Worrall - but had to pay a price when they had John Lewis sent off.

He was given his marching orders in the last minute by referee Ward after kicking and punching John Beyer, an unexpected incident in a game which never threatened violence until then.

What made it so pointless was that by then Tilbury were home and dry and Lewis retaliated after Beyer had collided with him in chasing a ball to the goal-line.

The goal that mattered had come in the last minute of the first half when Worrall cleverly flicked the ball up, turned and volleyed past Slough 'keeper Trevor Porter.

Slough had their chances, Turl volleying wide to end a good move and Lee producing a good save from Barry Wilson.

The penalty miss summed up their attitude. It was a harsh decision anyway, Terry Reardon flicking the ball through and Walden's hand happening to be in the way rather than anything intentional.

Roy Davies, who has not been enjoying the best of times in recent games, stepped up and casually sent Wilson the wrong way but put the ball high against the bar.

The only good thing to emerge from the game for Slough was the first half form of Richard Whitty, a late signing on the night from Binfield.
