Despite the scoreline, Horsham’s forwards lacked cohesion and, as a result, many chances were missed. particularly in the first half during which the visitors dominated the game.

Several times solo runs were made by the forwards but usually, after beating several opponents, the man ended up by being robbed before the final pass could be made. Only Mick Browning seemed capable of shooting to effect against a defence which crumbled almost at sight.

The game had only been started a few minutes when Tony Barnett was brought down when streaking for goal. The referee, uncertain of what to award, consulted a linesman and then pointed to the penalty spot, with Dave Collyer converting.

Fifteen minutes later Slough were on terms when, following a corner, inside-left R. Nairn pushed the ball into the net through a knot of players in the goalmouth.

Collyer left the field for a while to receive attention on a leg injury and during this time Roy Mobsby kicked an almost certain Slough goal high over the bar with keeper Brian McDonough beaten.

Two minutes later, however, Browning beat two men in a typical burst and slipped the ball to Don Cocozza to score.

Slough swept back into the attack again for Ron Hartley to kick off the goal-line following a free-kick.

Only a few minutes of the half remained when Browning dashed through again, and passed to Cocozza before slipping the return ball into the net, wide of the keeper.

After a threatening Barnett move, soon after the re-start, the left winger put a hard, low ball across the goal and it was whipped into the net by the watchful Cocozza.

McDonough was unsighted as right-half Patterson cracked the ball past him from the edge of the penalty area to make it 4-2, but eight minutes later Cocozza made a lovely solo burst through the defence before slipping the ball to Browning. The centre-forward, seeing Barnett unmarked, flicked the ball over for him to score.

Horsham then conceded a penalty when Glyn Jones brought down left-winger Bright, and to complete an unhappy afternoon for the Horsham centre-half, Jones then put through his own goal when trying to clear a fast right-wing cross.

However, Denis Stillwell ensured Horsham’s second 6-4 win of the season when he lobbed the ball over the goalkeepers head after good work from Browning and Collyer.
