This was the first home match for the Slough team for five weeks, and a large crowd welcomed the team back to the Dolphin for the game against Cambridge.

The game opened quietly, and it was Slough who first looked dangerous when Mounteney shot well, onlky to see the ball hit the left back and go wide of the goal, with the keeper beaten.

Cambridge surprised Slough in the next few minutes with some fine football, and Mann gave Wakefield no chance with a terrific drive from 20 yards out. Mann also added another a few minutes later. Both team went near to scoring in the remainder of the first half.

At the start of the second half play was very fast, and Grantham reduced Slough’s deficit with a shot which completely deceived the Slough defenders. The Slough supporters thought the fate of their team sealed when, 15 minutes from time, Barnard scored for Cambridge to give them a 3-1 lead. But within a minute Grantham had again reduced Slough’s arrears.

Then came the equaliser, Grantham completing his hat trick when converting a centre from Marshall. And then came the hectic struggle for the winning goal. The excitement among the crowd was terrific when, in the last minute, Mounteney scored the winning goal for Slough with a brilliant shot
