Stan Gorst

Bio

Stan Gorst was a right-half who signed for Slough from Maidenhead United in December 1959 before moving on to Wokingham Town in the summer of 1960.

The former Reading groundsman, who served his National Service as an Army cook in Aldershot, played about 1,500 competitive football matches between 1948 and 1990.

He made his debut for Maidenhead United at the age of 20 against Eastbourne in 1953 and was considered a protégé of manager Len Allum. During his tenure at the club, Stan won the county cup in 1956 and 1957, a Corinthian League Memorial Shield winner's plaque in 1957 and a Corinthian League Championship medal in 1958. Stan played for the Magpies between 1953 and 1960.

After brief stints with Slough Town and Wokingham Town, Stan and his family emigrated to Adelaide, South Australia, in 1966 where he played as a semi-professional footballer while working as a foreman for the Chrysler car company. They returned to England in 1975 to Hayling Island, in Hampshire, where Stan worked as a self-employed carpenter and for the maintenance team at the Lakeside Holiday Camp until he retired at the age of 65. He continued playing football at Hayling United FC until the age of 57.

Stan passed away on Tuesday, 3 February 2015 after struggling with Alzheimer's disease from 2008.
