Slough U18s in nine-goal thriller at Holloways Park

Oscar Betts scores a dramatic winning goal in the final minute to seal a 5-4 win for the Slough U18s.

Slough entertained Abbey Rangers on Monday evening at Holloways Park after a 4-4 draw when the teams met on the opening day of the season.

Within four minutes, Abbey were 1-0 up thanks to an amazing strike which the Slough keeper could only watch fly into the top corner.

Slough dusted themselves down. Raju intercepted a pass from an Abbey defender 20 yards out and took it on, rounding the keeper and playing the ball into an empty net. Already a goal-fest was on the menu with only ten minutes played.

Both teams played flowing end-to-end football. A Slough corner from Betts found the head of 15-year-old Max Green, whose bullet header left the Abbey keeper no chance with 18 minutes gone.

Abbey then went close a couple of times, with Slough's keeper coming to the rescue. A mistimed bounce saw Abbey's forward get in behind and he rounded the keeper and rolled the ball into the empty net to make it 2-2 with 26 minutes played.

Then good work from Tull found Betts, playing off the fullback's shoulder, and he got in behind to fire his shot across the keeper and into the Abbey net leaving the keeper no chance. At the break Slough went in 3-2 up.

The game re-started with both teams again playing good meaningful football. Both went close but yet again credit to both keepers who kept their opposition at bay until the 70th minute. Then Abbey struck again to bring the game all square again.

Then in the 82nd minute, Raju beating the full-back and squared the ball back to the oncoming Betts to slot home.

That wasn’t the end of the scoring though, as in the 86th minute Abbey got a corner on the left side which saw their centre half out-jump his marker and head over the line to bring it level once again at 4-4.

But it wasn't to end there, as in the 90th minute Betts beat the offside trap and calmly rounded the keeper before slotting the ball home to win the game 5-4.

Both teams put on a great display of football. Next, the U18s travel to Wembley on Wednesday night for a 19:45 kick-off.
