Chairman's end of season thoughts

Chairman Steve Easterbrook provides his thoughts following the Rebels' first season in the Southern League Premier Division.

09/05/15

As we continue to move forwards each year the challenges become greater – and this season proved to be no different both on and off the field.

Chairman Steve Easterbrook

Steve Easterbrook was unable to attend the club's annual end of season presentation evening on Saturday 2nd May, but provided supporters with the below end of season message:

"As we continue to move forwards each year the challenges become greater – and this season proved to be no different both on and off the field."

"Our first season in the Premier Division brought many highs with some great and enjoyable victories, particularly against the big guns - Truro, Corby, Weymouth to name just a few and of course there was that great performance against Margate in the FA Trophy. Unfortunately, however, these highs were tempered with a few lows and the less said about those the better (Slough 1-7 Redditch). In a strange way that was a result that put the league into perspective - if you are not ‘on your game’ you will be punished and as we have found out there really are no weak teams in this division.

"So the season was very much up and down and I know that Jon and Neil did become a bit frustrated as the season progressed with injuries and untimely suspensions playing their part on our results. It’s been a learning curve and one I think we will benefit from as we will go into next season older and wiser and relishing the challenge it presents. If anything the league looks likely to be stronger so trying to get off to a solid start will be important.

"So thanks to players and management for a hard fought credible first season in the Premier Division and one we can hopefully build on.
Before continuing I would like to, on the footballing side, single out one person - Kevin McGoldrick - or to give him his actual christened name Super Kev. What can I say, one of the nicest people you could meet in football and someone who is genuinely willing to help anyone - he has also been with the club now for over 20 years through thick and thin - please a round of applause for a remarkable person – Super Kev.

"Off the field we are now finally in the position where assuming (and I emphasise assuming) the council honour their commitment, then work on the new community football ground should commence in the summer. Like many, however - I await the first brick being placed.

"There is not enough time for me to thank everyone individually that deserves to be thanked however I would like to mention a few people who have tirelessly been ever present week in week out quietly, or in some cases noisily, going about their duties.

"Firstly Steve Chapman has without hesitation been absolutely fantastic. As you may or may not know Steve is responsible for our wonderful programme. I know how onerous and difficult a task this is and I would like to personally thank him for his professionalism and total dedication. Please - a round of applause for Steve and indeed everyone who contributes to the programme.

"Next, Sue and her team who run the club shop – always cheery – always positive - always up. Oh yes and when I see her she has always got a wad of cash to give me! Bliss. Please, a round of applause for Sue and her fantastic team.

"I can’t thank the committee enough for all that they do and a special mention to Kay who as well as carrying out many roles within the club, has also been helping the youth section and found time to walk over 100 miles for charity and is largely responsible for the wonderful introduction of the new Slough Town PALS disabled team - which I hope you agree is a fantastic thing for this club to be involved in.

"I would like to thank the Supporters Trust, MyFC and indeed all the corporate sponsors and individual sponsors who have put their hands in their pockets and made sacrifices to assist the club. I must mention the fantastic response to the ‘ground grading crew’ who under the excellent leadership of Mike Lightfoot turned Beaconsfield from a run-down village ground to a revitalised mini Wembley, well perhaps not, but I can tell you it was damn good! And we passed with flying colours. Also to all the stewards and match day helpers – thank you.

"As always great work from Tom Gathern and his media team who do a fantastic job keeping us up to date and informed about events on and off the field. Special mention to Mark Betts, an unsung hero who works tirelessly across all levels at the club including Slough Youth and The Slough Town Academy. Great work and also a massive thank you to all those involved in Rebels Radio, surprised someone hasn’t put in a 7 day approach!

"I could go on and I apologise if I have missed anyone but I would like to invite everybody to join me to thank all those people who volunteer and give up their valuable time to help run this club. It is not easy and to be brutally honest it is not always enjoyable – but something makes us do it for the good of the club. So please everyone, stamp, whistle and cheer as a thank you to our wonderful volunteers. Because we would not be here without them!

"Finally a thank you to Ian for hosting the presentations and a quick reminder that football is not in fact over for the season - Paul Lillywhite has arranged a Slough Town Legends game at Farnham Park featuring many old favourites. This should be great fun and I would urge everyone to go along and enjoy the game. Whilst some of them may be a bit older I am sure they know where the goal is... well, the bar at least!

"Have a great summer and Up the Rebels!"
