Looking Ahead: Merthyr Town

Joint managers Neil Baker and Jon Underwood discuss the side's win over Paulton Rovers and look ahead to the FA Trophy match at home to Merthyr Town.

14/11/14

Off the back of their 4-2 league victory over Paulton Rovers, Slough Town face Merthyr Town in the FA Trophy Second Round Qualifying, a side the Rebels have faced only once before and only in the same competition, last season.

On that day in 2013 the Rebels lost out to nine-man Merthyr in the First Round Qualifying. Ollie Burgess' superb freekick gave Slough the lead before Kayne McLaggon equalised on the hour mark, but it wasn't until the final 10 minutes when the drama began with the award of a penalty to Slough which was duly missed by Ed Smith. Merthyr Town's Jamie Rewbury was dismissed for a second bookable offence having conceded the penalty, worse still within seconds Paul Keddle was also dismissed for a second yellow all before the penalty was even taken.

Had Smith scored the penalty the task would surely have been beyond the nine men of Methyr who with five minutes remaining took the lead on the break with substitute Ian Traylor scoring to send The Martyrs through.

Ahead of the encounter joint manager Neil Baker commented:

"Having won two on the bounce we will look to make it three against a very strong Merthyr side.

In terms of the squad, we hope to have a strong 16 available. James Dobson trained on Thursday and will return after his ankle injury sustained at Biggleswade, we have slight concerns over Guy Hollis who has not trained this week due to tonsillitis, Ryan Parsons trained Thursday however was feeling his hip injury from Saturday, and Scott Harris was unable to train fully due to a dead leg.

This will be Aleks Gogic's last game for us before he returns to Reading, and we would like to thank him for his contribution with us, Jake Somerville will therefore continue with his recovery from injury with a game away at Ashford for Badshot Lea before returning to us Tuesday, and finally Leigh Rumbold returns to the UK on Sunday and will come straight into the squad next week".

Squad from: Gogic, Fraser, Hollis, Yorke, Jeffreys, R Parsons, Moran, Knight, Edwards, McClurg, Dobson, J Parsons, Sear, Smith, Dyer, Harris
