Preview: Taunton Town

A look ahead to tonight's trip to Somerset.

11/04/24

Next up for Slough Town is a clash long in the making – an away trip to Somerset to face Taunton Town, with the Rebels gunning for a top 10 finish in the final remaining games of the season, writes Freddie Gatrell.

Taunton Town have had a tough campaign, problems with the playing surface at Wordsworth Drive marring their progress throughout most of the campaign, with numerous postponements leaving the Peacocks with five games to play in a jam-packed final two weeks.

Over the course of the season, the Peacocks have had a challenging time on the pitch, currently residing in 22nd place and in the relegation zone, with 42 points over 41 games played, made up of 9 wins, 15 draws and 17 losses. Despite their precarious position in the table, the advantage of games in hand on all other teams other than Truro City will mean they have a fighting chance of avoiding relegation. It is likely that this evening’s game will be a feisty encounter between both sides looking for all three points.

Since joining the Peacocks back in 2016 as backroom coaching staff, manager Rob Dray has developed his side successfully, with Taunton now a well-established National League South side. Over his time with the club, he has brought them up to the National League South as champions of the Southern Premier South in 2021, taken the club to the FA Cup First Round and guided them to a comfortable mid-table finish in their debut season in the division. This season has been extremely testing for Dray and his team, with their aim to remain a National League South club still a strong target.

The key man for Taunton Town in recent weeks has been skipper, Nick Grimes – a centre half who has contributed with important defensive performances in recent weeks, including a clean sheet away at playoff hopefuls Braintree Town. As well as a being a strong leader and defender, the 26-year-old has popped up with vital goals in recent weeks, including goals against Worthing and Chelmsford City. A threat from set pieces and a strong penalty kick taker, Scott Davies’ side will have to be at their best to prevent Grimes from causing headaches.

Kick off tonight is at 7.45pm. Live coverage is available across all official club social media channels as well as live match commentary via Rebels Radio.
