Preview: Yeovil Town

A look ahead to tomorrow's match against the league leaders.

15/03/24

The Rebels take on league leaders, Yeovil Town at fortress Arbour Park tomorrow, writes Freddie Gatrell.

In a match that could define Slough’s league campaign, it is table-toppers Yeovil who are next to test the Rebels’ long unbeaten streak at home, with Slough looking to make further progress toward the promised land of the playoff places.

Nicknamed the Glovers, the Somerset based outfit face the 240-mile round trip to face a Slough side that will aim to be back at their best come tomorrow afternoon. Pegged back at Havant & Waterlooville and on the end of an unfortunate 2-1 loss, Scott Davies’ Rebels will be striving to put things right in arguably the toughest battle on the Arbour Park turf this season.

Yeovil have been the team to beat this season, with the Rebels unable to get the job done in Somerset back in late January, falling to defeat thanks to goals from Matt Worthington, Jordan Young and a late Frank Nouble penalty kick. Over the course of the campaign the Glovers’ record is excellent, with more wins than any other side in the division, racking up 24 victories, seven draws and seven defeats, leaving them nine points clear of 2nd place.

Despite being within touching distance of National League South glory, Yeovil’s form has taken a drastic turn for the worse, losing two games consecutively for the first time in the league this season. Both Chippenham Town and Welling United have walked away from Huish Park victorious, with the latter of the two sides claiming a double over Mark Cooper’s men. Over their last five games, they have only won once, against Farnborough, losing three times and being held to a goalless draw away at Aveley. This will all be positive reading for Scott Davies’ Rebels, who may feel this is as good a time as any to claim another home win.

Yeovil manager, Mark Cooper has a wealth of experience, both as a professional player as well as a manager, having played in the EFL with clubs like Fulham and Exeter City as well as at a host of non-league clubs such as Forest Green Rovers and Kettering Town. Beginning his managerial career at Tamworth, Cooper has gone on to win multiple league titles and promotions, including a five-year spell at Forest Green Rovers, leading them to the EFL for the first time in their history. As well as that, Cooper has managed clubs such as Peterborough United, Swindon Town and most recently Barrow AFC in League Two. Cooper will be hopeful he can regain National League status for the Glovers after their relegation at the end of the 2022/23 season.

A key man for the Glovers tomorrow will likely be Alex Fisher, the only player currently scoring consistently for Yeovil, having scored a goal against both Chippenham Town and Farnborough. 33-year-old Fisher has had a unique footballing career spanning clubs across Scotland, Spain, Italy and England. Having spent January on loan at Oxford City, Fisher appears to be regaining confidence and form since suffering a horror injury in April 2023 where he suffered a double leg break. The 6’3” forward will aim to cause a nuisance of himself in tomorrow’s clash, but the Rebels will be well prepared to deal with the forward’s physical presence, particularly with the return of centre half, Temi Eweka from suspension.

Kick-off is at 3pm tomorrow at Arbour Park. For any fans unable to attend tomorrow’s important game, live social media updates will be available on all official club social media channels, as well as live radio commentary courtesy of Rebels Radio.
