Preview: Chippenham Town

A look ahead to tomorrow’s match at Arbour Park.

16/02/24

Next up for the Rebels is Chippenham Town in a home clash, with Scott Davies’ Slough going into the encounter in high spirits after a brilliant last-gasp victory against Torquay United, writes Freddie Gatrell.

Chippenham also enter the weekend’s fixture high in confidence after a 1-0 away win against Dartford, thanks to a second half strike from Craig Fasanmade. With both sides tasting victory in their previous matches, it has all the makings of an interesting clash.

Over their last five matches, the Bluebirds have had fairly mixed results, with two losses, two wins, and a draw against Torquay United. The north-west Wiltshire outfit currently reside in 15th place in the table, up two places thanks to their win at Dartford. Six places below the Rebels in the table, the Bluebirds' record is an even spread of results with 10 wins, 11 draws, and 11 losses over 32 matches, totaling 41 points. Over those 32 games, Chippenham have had some excellent results, including a draw against table-toppers Yeovil Town and in-form Chelmsford City, as well as a key three points against Maidstone United.

In our previous meeting away at Chippenham, it was the Bluebirds who kept all three points with a 2-1 victory, a 61st-minute Matt McClure strike being the defining moment of that game.

Since then, a lot has changed for both sides, with the Rebels just outside the playoff places, whilst Chippenham have seen their form fluctuate. The manager of Chippenham Town, Gary Horgan, has held the position since the end of the 2021/22 season when the previous management vacated their position at the club. Having had two spells at the club during his playing career, Horgan rejoined the Bluebirds from Hungerford Town in September 2016 before deciding to join the coaching staff for the 2017/18 season. A man who knows Chippenham Town inside and out, Horgan will be eager to replicate his side’s winning performance against the Rebels earlier this season and will be gunning for all three points this Saturday at Arbour Park.

A key figure to highlight this season is Bluebirds forward, Matt McClure, who was the key man in our previous meeting, netting the winning goal. Born in Slough, the 32-year-old is a striker with professional experience in a lengthy career beginning back in 2010, where he made his debut for Wycombe Wanderers before going on to make more than 100 appearances for the club. Since then, he has played for numerous other clubs such as Dagenham & Redbridge, Aldershot Town, Maidstone United, and Gloucester City before joining Chippenham in January 2023. The left-footed forward will be at the forefront of the Rebels' defenders' minds who will have to be at their best to prevent the Northern Irishman from finding the net.

The match will kick off at 3pm, with Scott Davies’ men aiming to make it 17 matches unbeaten at home. We hope to see you at Arbour Park in numbers, but for those Rebels fans that cannot attend the match, social media updates will be provided on all club channels, and live radio commentary will be available from Rebels Radio.
