Preview: Yeovil Town

A look ahead to tonight's National League South match at Yeovil Town.

30/01/24

The stage is set for today’s showdown between Slough Town and table-toppers Yeovil Town, and it has all the makings of an exciting clash at Huish Park, writes Freddie Gatrell.

Yeovil have been in fine form all season, losing only three times over the 28 games played so far. To complement this statistic, the Glovers also boast a formidable home record, having not lost a game at home all campaign. Over the full course of the 28 games played so far this season, the Somerset-based side has stormed to a 10-point lead at the top of the Vanarama National League South table with 19 wins, six draws, and three defeats. However, in Yeovil’s most recent game, they failed to beat St. Albans City at Clarence Park, with Jordan Young’s first-half strike being cancelled out by Mitchell Weiss.

Both sides will be eager to return to winning ways, following the Rebels’ surprising defeat to relegation-threatened Dover Athletic. Yeovil are currently on an unbeaten run stretching to nine games, with Scott Davies’ men looking to bring this to an end and be the first side this season to taste victory at Huish Park.

Under the stewardship of seasoned manager Mark Cooper, Yeovil have become a feared outfit this season. The 55-year-old manager has a wealth of experience, both as a professional player and as a manager, having played in the EFL with clubs like Fulham and Exeter City, as well as at a host of non-league clubs such as Forest Green Rovers and Kettering Town. Beginning his managerial career at Tamworth, Cooper has gone on to win multiple league titles and promotions, including a five-year spell at Forest Green Rovers, leading them to the EFL for the first time in their history. As well as that, Cooper has managed Peterborough United, Swindon Town, and most recently Barrow AFC in League Two. Cooper will be hopeful he can regain National League status for the Glovers after their relegation at the end of the 2022/23 season.

Cooper boasts a formidable squad of in-form footballers at his disposal this season and has numerous players who will cause the Rebels problems. Perhaps the most notable of these in recent weeks is 32-year-old forward, Frank Nouble. Over the Glovers’ recent games, Nouble has stepped up and scored crucial goals to single-handedly win three points for his side – scoring the only goal in victories against Eastbourne Borough and Taunton Town. A former Chelsea academy youngster, Nouble has spent most of his career bouncing around EFL sides, initially joining West Ham United in 2009 before moving on. A seasoned veteran striker, Nouble will prove a physical challenge for the Slough defenders. Standing at 6’2”, the right-footed striker has netted nine times this campaign and will be aiming to improve this tally again tomorrow evening. Scott Davies’ men will need to be at their best to prevent Nouble from making his mark on proceedings.

Kick-off is at 7:45 pm, at Huish Park in Yeovil. Live social media updates will be available for fans who cannot attend, as well as live commentary courtesy of Rebels Radio, and the match will be streamed live on National League TV.
