Preview: Maidstone United

A look ahead to tomorrow afternoon's match against Maidstone United.

19/01/24

This weekend calls for a return to Arbour Park for Slough Town, who face in-form Maidstone United in what will be a tough clash between two strong sides, writes Freddie Gatrell.

Maidstone currently reside in 4th place in the table on 46 points, separated from 2nd placed Worthing by only goal difference. Over the 27 games played so far this season, the Stones have won 13, drawing 7 and losing 7. As well as their impressive league record, the Kent-based outfit have beaten the likes of League One Stevenage and League Two Barrow AFC on their way to an Emirates FA Cup 4th Round tie against Ipswich Town, who currently sit 2nd in the Championship. The Stones will prove a tough test for the Rebels, despite both sides being in strong form in their recent games. Over their last 5 games, Maidstone have won 3 times, drawing once and lost once, with their most recent result a surprise defeat against 23rd placed Havant & Waterlooville, thanks to a second half brace from Ryan Seager.

Maidstone United’s manager, George Elokobi has vast experience within the English football pyramid. Elokobi was born in Cameroon, spending his childhood years in the African country before moving to England when he was 16. Dulwich Hamlet gave him his break in football, and it wasn’t long before he was picked up by Colchester United. Four years later Elokobi joined Wolverhampton Wanderers where, during a six-year stay, he won League One and Championship titles and played in the Premier League.

Elokobi went on to make appearances for clubs such as Nottingham Forest and Oldham Athletic, as well as a return to Colchester United. He then entered the non-league game with Leyton Orient and Aldershot Town, from where he moved to Maidstone. After ending his impressive career, the former defender joined the coaching staff at Maidstone, before being given the managerial position on a permanent basis in January 2023.

Elokobi has a strong group at his disposal and will be aiming to cause the Rebels as many problems as possible. Undoubtedly one of their more threatening attackers is Matt Rush, who was signed from Aveley back in November 2023 and has since proven his prowess in front of goal, having netted 10 goals since then. Slough’s backline will have to be at their best to prevent the centre-forward improving his tally.

Kick-off is at 3pm at Arbour Park tomorrow afternoon, with live updates on our social media channels as well as live commentary available courtesy of Rebels Radio.
