Preview: Weymouth

A look ahead to tomorrow's match at The Bob Lucas Stadium.

12/01/24

Another away day beckons for Slough Town as they face a trip to Dorset for a match against 20th placed Weymouth, writes Freddie Gatrell.

A win will be a must for both sides but in particular for the Terras, as they sit precariously above the relegation places. Despite being 5 points clear of 21st placed Eastbourne Borough, Weymouth will be eager to increase their distance from the drop zone. Over their last 5 games the Dorset-based outfit will feel hard done by to have not picked up more points, with 3 draws, a win and a defeat in their most recent game against Tonbridge Angels. Over the course of those 5 games, Weymouth have found the back of the net, proving their danger in front of goal. Similarly, the Rebels are a consistently dangerous side in front of goal, with their last game without scoring a goal in the league coming back in October, in a 0-0 draw against Chelmsford City. This could spell the making of a goal-heavy game - although in our last meeting with the Terras this was not the case, as the spoils were shared in a goalless draw at Arbour Park. Both sides will be eager to go one better this time around and snatch all three points.

Weymouth’s manager Bobby Wilkinson will be eager to turn around his side’s fortunes after the club’s relegation from the National League at the end of the 2021/22 season. Wilkinson is an experienced manager and former player at both Reading and Fulham, before seeing his career being cut short due to injury. As a manager, he has impressive experience, learning from the likes of Brendan Rodgers and Brian McDermott. His previous Bracknell Town side was a fearsome outfit over several campaigns, with the highlight of his time there being where he led the side to a triumphant league victory during the 2021/22 season, where his team, featuring current Rebels Temi Eweka and Dan Bayliss, won the division by 20 points, conceding just 12 goals all season. Wilkinson will hope he can reach similar levels with the Terras over the remainder of the campaign.

Wilkinson will be reliant on his talented attacking youngster, Ezio Touray, who joined the Terras in September 2023 and has impressed hugely with his performances, netting 5 goals in his first 3 games after joining the club. Most recently, Touray impressed with his performance against Weston-super-Mare, where his 87th minute equaliser saved a point for Weymouth. The talented 20-year-old Italian could prove to be a thorn in the side of the Slough Town defence and will be eager to improve on his goal tally for the campaign.

Kick off is at 3pm tomorrow afternoon at the Bob Lucas Stadium in Weymouth. Live commentary and social media updates are available from Rebels Radio and on our official social media channels.
