Preview: Farnborough

A look ahead to the challenge awaiting the Rebels against Farnborough on Saturday.

15/12/23

The Rebels return to action this weekend with a home match against Farnborough, the latest challenge for Scott Davies' men, writes Freddie Gatrell.

Farnborough is a side the Rebels have faced twice so far this season, firstly the away league match and last month, at home in the Isuzu FA Trophy. In those encounters, a wonderful Scott Davies free kick claimed a valuable point for Slough at BR Saunders Transport Community Stadium, and another well-struck free kick, this time from Johnny Goddard helped Slough defeat Boro in the Second Round of the FA Trophy.

Saturday’s game has the makings of a hotly contested match, with Farnborough looking to avenge those two defeats. Since the last time Slough faced the Hampshire-based outfit, their form has been inconsistent overall. Two emphatic defeats against Worthing and, most recently, Taunton Town alongside an exhilarating 4-3 victory against Aveley - thanks to a 90th-minute winner from Selim Saied - as well as a 2-2 draw against Bath City, where an Aaron Kuhl penalty in the second half was not enough to secure all three points.

Currently residing in 13th place in the table on 29 points, seven more than Slough but with four more games played, the Rebels will feel hopeful they can make it three games unbeaten against the Yellows this season. Manager Spencer Day, a businessman turned manager, has been at the helm of Farnborough since 2011. Day will be optimistic his side can cause problems for the Rebels, particularly after their recent goal-scoring antics against Aveley and Bath City.

Day will surely be relying on in-form winger Selim Saied to inspire his team towards all three points. Saied signed for Farnborough permanently during the summer of 2023 and has since gone on to impress for Day's side throughout the season. The 20-year-old Tunisian-born wide man has proven to have an aptitude for scoring important goals, including a strike against table-toppers Yeovil Town, as well as a last-gasp winner in their most recent victory against 5th-placed Aveley. Scott Davies' defence will be aware of the threat posed by the one-time Slough Town winger and will have to be on their best form to prevent Saied from creating an impact for the Yellows.

Kick-off will be at 3pm this Saturday, 16th December at Arbour Park, with live commentary available on Rebels Radio, as well as updates across our club social media platforms.
